  • A Restoration Job

    The other day a childhood flashback recalled some Ferrara Pan candies I would get from the canteen at summer camp in the late 1980s. There have always been Lemon Heads, but preceeding today's Apple Heads and Grape Heads were Johnny Apple Treats and Alexander the Grape. (The racist cherry flavor shall remain nameless.)

    A Google image search revealed a complete lack of high reslution images of the Johnny Apple Treats package, and no vintage boxes were for sale on eBay (which I would love to scan and enlarge to reveal the printed Benday dots). Referencing a printout of a tiny JPEG, I set about recreating this logo and character by hand with ink and paper, and then coloring digitally.

    The next thing I knew, I had spent several hours meticulously recreating an illustration that must have originally been dashed off quite crudely. What drove me was the strong pull of nostalgia. I also have a thing for creepy anthropomorphic food.

    So here it is, my gift to the internet: a high resolution image of Ferrara Pan's Johnny Apple Treats package. You are welcome.
